Aussie Rules UK has launched Football X, a variation of Aussie Rules designed to make it easier for young children to learn the skills of the game.
Football X is a fun and exciting new game that combines the skills of Soccer and Aussie Rules.
The basics of Football X are:
- non-contact game played between two teams of 9 players – 3 defenders, 3 forwards and 3 midfield players. One of the defenders is the goalkeeper.
- played on a soccer field, using a soccer ball. Like soccer, the object is to score more goals than the opposing team.
- the ball is moved around the field by kicking (either on the ground or out of the hands) or by handballing the ball. So every one gets to use their hands, not just the goalkeeper.
- the ball can be moved forward or backwards and there is no off-side rule.
- players must bounce the ball when they run more than 10 metres.
- there is no tackling – when a player is touched they must dispose of the ball by kicking or handballing. Throwing the ball is not allowed.
- Players taking a mark from a corner kick, inside the penalty box, are permitted to have a one on one shot against the goalkeeper.
- the usual skills of Aussie Rules apply – kicking, handballing, marking, bouncing and rucking.
"Football X has been designed as an introduction to the skills of Australian football in English schools, particularly those which only have soccer pitches. The game is played on a soccer field using a round ball. The players can learn a new game whilst in surrounds they are comfortable with, therefore allowing for greater concentration on developing skills," said ARUK General Manager Brian Clarke.
"What we are essentially doing is creating a system whereby kids can go from A to C, via B. We expect this version of the game to be very popular in the UK."
